Numanthia - Tinta de Toro 2005 (750ml)
Numanthia Description
Ungrafted vines between 50 and 100 years old give birth to Numanthia, the estate's signature wine. Low yields provide concentrated fruit of remarkable intensity and power, carefully nurtured during vinification. 18 months' ageing in French oak brings balance and structure. Wood aromas on the nose are coupled with notes of berries, cedar and liquorice in the mouth, closing with a long, silken finish.
In 2005 the contrast between hot days and cool nights favored ripening, while September's continuing warm weather and minimal rainfall enabled the grapes to achieve optimal acidity. Drink till 2030.
Wine Spectator: 94 Points
Espresso and allspice flavors show oak, but there's plenty of ripe black fruit on the palate. The plush texture is supported by ripe, muscular tannins, and licorice, mineral and graphite notes add complexity. Best from 2010 through 2020.
Vinous: 93 Points
Deep ruby. A deep, youthfully brooding bouquet offers dark cherry, blackcurrant, incense and suave oak spices. Spicy cherry and dark berry flavors show an exotic anise quality and slow-building sweetness. This gently tannic, chewy, extremely persistent wine finishes with echoes of oak spice and floral pastille, not to mention excellent vivacity.
