Tullamore D.E.W. Irish Whiskey has a history that extends to 1829 and was originally distilled in the town of Tullamore. Named jointly for the town and an early manager of the concern (Daniel W. Williams - D.E.W.), butf ollowing a difficult period beginning with the U.S. 'social experiment' with Prohibition, the brand disappeared until revived in 2000  William Grant & Sons, and is now produced at the New Midleton Distillery.

Tullamore is the world's second most consumed Irish Whiskey (behind Jameson), but is third in United States following both Jameson and Bushmills. However, all Irish whiskey has struggled with the Scotch 'juggernaut'. There are more than "90 million cases of Scottish whiskey get shipped to all corners of the globe each year, while Ireland ships a relatively modest 5 million cases". However, as with all 'brown spirits', there has been a significant growth in the sales of Irish whiskey. Tullamore D.E.W. sales have doubled in the past five years.

Tullamore's Phoenix is named for the revival of Tullamore following a 1785 "devastating hot-air balloon accident and resulting blaze that nearly destroyed the town". Since that day, the phoenix has been a central part of the town's coat of arms." The 1829 establishment of the Tullamore D.E.W. distillery was viewed as a symbol of that 'rebirth'.

Tullamore Dew Description

The original blended Irish whiskey, known the world over for its smooth and gentle complexity. For one, it is triple distilled and patiently aged in a combination of ex-bourbon and sherry casks, developing its distinctive smoothness. Secondly, being a blend of all three types of Irish whiskey, it has a gentle complexity. The malt and the pot still whiskey we use give it citrus and spicy notes.

The early floral yet biscuit flavour reflects the grain whiskey, while the soft spicy notes can be attributed to the pot still whiskey in the blend. The citrus flavour is contributed by the malt. Finally notice the nutty or even marzipan note combined with distinctive vanilla in the finish – imparted by the sherry and bourbon casks used in maturation.

NOSE: Light sweet citrus and green apple combined with vanilla undertones.
TASTE: Early fresh fruit leads to a definite light spice followed by some toasted wood which evolves into a delicious vanilla sweetness.
FINISH: Medium length, buttery mellowness with a touch of marzipan accompanying the lingering vanilla.
